Lips Popping: Red or Lead?

Red, a hot trendy color for the season have been spotted everywhere from the catwalk in the streets of New York and Milan, and artfully demonstrated as a concealer, and as an eyeshadow by beauty bloggers.

Some celebrities like Gwen Stefani, to name one has made red lips part of her signature look. It’s a power color that will get you noticed in the boardroom, on the streets, or the sheets. Red is hot in any shape or form!

Can you rock a red lip?
Yes, you can! Though some may believe otherwise; and I’m no beauty expert, but I do believe there is a shade of red for every skin tone; it’s just a process of elimination and time searching for what fits you.

Do yourself a favor and consult a beauty expert before spending money on products that may just end up in the trash. Find a beauty advisor at a large department store who can help you choose what will have you feeling spicy and looking hot, not hot and flustered.

My tip: Consider a deep shade of red instead of a bright orangey red on medium to dark tone. Try out a few shades before giving up on the hue.

Aside from the difficulties in finding a befitting shade of red lipstick, there are overwhelming concerns about lead still being used in the beauty industry.

I, myself have never been a huge makeup fan. My routine usually consists of two coats of waterproof mascara, a thin to medium eyeliner, and a clear lip balm.

But over this past year, I have become enthused by what changes could be made to my aging face simply applying makeup and using a few techniques.

So, I’ve adventured out now using other products like concealers and foundations to hide my pores and age spots.
But, it has been no easy task finding a foundation that blends well with my skin tone; with so many options available on the market and companies claiming to be made for people of color. I am still in pursuit of finding a better match for my skin complexion.

One day while swiping through social media makeup tutorials and pics, I came across and read an article about lead and other toxins still being used in cosmetics today.

I found it interesting and wanted to share with my reader’s the safety issues inside this climbing billion-dollar beauty industry we’ve come to love so much.

Many labels may read: Not tested on animals but may contain chemicals harmful to humans. Are we now the guinea pig!?!, you ask. I asked the same question. Not sure but I do wonder.

Though the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have set guidelines and regulations on what ingredients are restricted for use in those money-making color palettes.

Still many of those bad chemicals continually find their way to makeup counters to be sold and bought by the US consumer. Some small specialty stores may still carry these products without the FDA knowledge.
Read this article and review the list of additives and materials unauthorized for use in the US beauty market.

LEAD, once a big problem in interior paints, has to be removed with special care; is highly dangerous to your health especially in children who may ingest chipped paint containing lead.

This metal can easily be ingested through the mouth at high levels when put in lipstick. But, lead is not only found in lipstick, it can be found in any cosmetic product.

Do your research before buying your products (I’m still researching myself); paying a bit more for an item may be worth the investment in the end.

Here’s a couple of companies with claims of having safe beauty products:

Burt’s Bee has a natural approach to healthcare products. Established in 1984 and co-founded by a woman. Burt’s Bee produces natural lip balm products using pure honey and beeswax and other care products. They have extended their line to include other friendly beauty products like lipstick.

The Honest Co. a billion-dollar company itself; creates health conscience items for the entire family including diapers; household cleaning supplies, and lipstick. Thanks, Jessica Alba for your honesty!
